Your site is clean, your Google ranking is decent… and yet ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini never mention you? That's expected: it's a different game.
SEO: getting ranked
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is about a position in a list of results. The levers haven't changed:
- keywords and search intent
- backlinks and domain authority
- speed, mobile, Core Web Vitals
- title, description, canonical tags, sitemap
Goal: the click.
GEO: getting cited
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) targets something else: having your content used inside the answer of a generative engine. There is no page 1 here. There is one answer, and the 2 or 3 sources it cites.
What matters:
- direct answers to concrete questions ("how much does an MVP cost?")
- machine-readable structure: clear headings, lists, FAQ, structured data (JSON-LD)
- verifiable facts: numbers, dates, ranges, named examples
- an explicit positioning: who you are, for whom, on what
Goal: the mention.
What actually changes
| | SEO | GEO | |---|---|---| | Target | Googlebot | LLMs + AI crawlers | | Outcome | a ranked link | a citation in the answer | | Winning content | long, keyword-rich | short, factual, structured | | Key signal | backlinks | clarity + consistency |
The mistakes I see most often
- A fully client-side rendered site: the crawler gets an empty page
- Blocking GPTBot or ClaudeBot in robots.txt "for safety"
- Pages with no clear answer: lots of storytelling, zero facts
- No FAQ, no schema.org
Do you have to choose?
No. SEO is still the foundation: without an indexable, fast, well-structured site, GEO doesn't work. GEO is an extra layer: writing so an AI can understand you, summarize you and cite you without getting it wrong.
In 2026 the right question is no longer "am I on page 1?" but "if someone asks ChatGPT for a freelance mobile developer, am I part of the answer?".
